Sinking Our Teeth into CO2 Sequestration

As CO2 levels rise, increasing attention is being focused on the idea of sinking, or sequestering, the potent greenhouse gas in two ways: through geologic sequestration, which involves CO2 storage in deep underground geologic formations, or via terrestrial sequestration, which involves optimizing the natural process of CO2 storage in plants, such as trees, and soils.

The map shown here, courtesy of the Department of Energy, identifies the major contributors to CO2 pollution in the U.S., the colored dots indicating electricity generation, petroleum and natural gas processing, cement plants, ethanol production, and refineries/chemical operations, among others.

The regional differences are a key element in the DOE-formed Regional Carbon Sequestration Partnerships (RCSPs), a government/industry effort aimed at determining the most suitable technologies, regulations and infrastructure needs for carbon capture and sequestration (CCS) in seven regions of the U.S. and Canada.

The seven RCSPs include more than 350 state agencies, universities and private companies, across 40 states, three Indian nations and four Canadian provinces.

To date, the effort has identified sequestration opportunities in each of the regions, including, for example, storing CO2 in unmineable coal seams in Montana, North Dakota and Alberta, Canada, and in plentiful oil and gas reservoirs in the southeastern region, particularly Louisiana and Texas.

Terrestrial sequestration is being studied in northern California and Oregon. Also part of the western region effort: a recently launched saline formation pilot investigating CO2 storage in the Colorado Plateau Region of northern Arizona.
